What the history shows
- Long flat periods happen. Prices barely moved in the late 1990s and fell between 2013 and 2015 after the 2012 peak.
- Big jumps come in uncertain times. Prices rose sharply around the 2008 financial crisis, in 2020 during the pandemic, and again in the last few years.
- The rupee adds to the rise. A weaker rupee has made gold rise faster in India than in dollar terms.
Why these numbers are lower than jewellers' rates
The table uses the international price converted at that day's exchange rate. Retail rates in India are higher because they add import duty, 3% GST and local premiums — see why the gold price changes. Today's retail rate in Chennai is ₹14,357 per gram for 24K and ₹13,160 for 22K.
